What is Blephasteam Treatment?

Dry Eye Blephasteam Treatment could be a part of your action plan to relieve symptoms relating to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

This in-chair procedure is regulated by one of our Optometrists skilled in dry eye diagnosis and treatment. Blephasteam is a safe and convenient treatment.

The unique eyelid warming device provides moisture and heat therapy to help relieve symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and other associated dry eye symptoms.

Blephasteam was created to increase tear quality, lower tear evaporation, improve vision and eye health.

Patients have reported significant reduction of dry eye symptoms after just one treatment. The frequency of blephasteam treatments vary depending on your diagnosis and the Optometrists advice.

How Blephasteam Treatments are used to treat dry eyelids

Meibomian glands are the oil glands secreting oil to the surface of the eye. The oil lubrication prevents the eyes from drying out.

When the eye oil glands are not secreting enough oil to the surface of the eye, often caused by the meibomian glands being plugged by hardened oil glands, dry eye symptoms appear.

A Blephastream treatment for a dry eye patient suffering from a dry eye condition uses a regulated, damp heat, remedy around the blocked eyelids to unblock the Meibomian Glands.

This regulated temperature at approximately 42 degrees melts the hardened oil glands and, in most cases, unblocks the once blocked oil glands to enable healthy oil flow again.

Once the Blephasteam procedure is complete, our Optometrists may apply pressure to your eyelids to express the glands and compress out the oils.

Our Optometrists skilled in dry eyes use forceps, for the eyes, to squeeze the eyelid and promote healthy oil gland and eye surface lubrication.

FAQ:

Is the meibomian gland expression painful?

Our Optometrists walk you through each procedure, have lots of experience in treating dry eyes and always use best practice when completing treatments. The first time you have your eyelids expressed, you may experience some discomfort, but the dry eye symptom relief that followed the meibomian gland expression painful always outweighs the discomfort. As our Optometrists are therapeutically endorsed, they may use anaesthetic drops in your eyes before the treatment begins.

Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist

Each of our Optometrists are skilled in Dry Eyes but are not Ophthalmologists.

The owner of our three Melbourne Optometry and Dry Eye clinics is the founder of the Dry Eye Group in Australia.

Each of our Optometrists within the Dry Eye Group are passionate and experienced in diagnosing and treating Dry Eye diseases.

Many of our patients are referred by Ophthalmologists to have their dry eyes assessed, diagnosed, and treated according to their condition.

Ophthalmologists specialise in eye and vision care that require advanced care or surgery. We are proud to say that all our Optometrists are therapeutically endorsed.

This means that our Optometrists hold additional qualifications and endorsements to prescribe scheduled medicines for the treatment of eye conditions and diseases.
