LipiFlow Treatment for Meibomian Gland Disfunction (MGD) is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved.

LipiFlow is the newest Dry Eye treatment procedure available to treat the root cause of your dry eye condition.

The LipiFlow procedure was designed to unblock blocked meibomian glands to maintain normal meibomian gland function which ensures good visual and a healthy ocular surface long term.

The LipiFlow activators are gently tucked in between your eyelids and your ocular surface by a qualified Optometrist. The LipiFlow activators never touch your corneal surface.

Once in place, the Lipiflow treatment provides heat and pressure to the inner eyelids.

The heat rapidly and efficiently raises the content causing the blockage inside of the glands to melt away.

The pressure applied by the pulsing LipiFlow activators moves the content that was causing the blockage to exit towards the gland opening, clearing out the meibomian glands and allowing them to return to a healthy function.

LipiFlow is the only automated treatment indicated for Meibomian Gland Disfunction (MGD). LipiFlow treatment is safe and sterile.

It is an efficient, single-dose, approximately 20-30 minute in-office procedure conducted by our therapeutically endorsed Optometrists specialising in Dry Eyes.

Some treatments attempt to provide more liquid to your tears, but without the natural oils produced by eyelid ducts, tears will continue to evaporate faster than they are being made.

LipiFlow Procedure Broken Down

The LipiFlow treatment is a simple, quick procedure that results in high satisfaction and lasting effectiveness for our Dry Eye patients. There is an abundance of data on safety and efficacy. This technology is based off over 25 years of extensive research into the causes of dry eyes.

Below is a four-minute YouTube video clearly outlining how LipiFlow treatments can help reduce dry eye symptoms and can improve quality of life.

LipiFlow consists of:

  • Inflation Technology
There are pressure sensors in the console ensure the application of safe levels of pressure.
  • Lid Warmer
Redundant sensors within the lid warmer protect against unsafe temperatures.
  • Vaulted Cornea Shield
Insulation protects the cornea from exceeding a safe temperature, while an intelligent pressure feedback loop sends pulsed sequences to expel blockages and stagnant material from the gland. The vaulted design protects the delicate structures of the eye from both heat and pressure.

The importance of LipiFlow treatments reducing long term effects of Meibomian Gland Disfunction (MGD)

Treating Dry Eye conditions with Lipiflow treatments optimises that ocular surface by stabilising the tear film. This is an important step prior to surgeries such as cataract surgery.

Failure to manage ocular surface disease (OSD) before cataract surgery could potentially result in long term effects such as:

  • Unsatisfactory vision
  • Refractive misses
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Induced higher-order aberrations
  • New and/ or worsened dry eye symptoms
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Post-operative infections

LipiFlow optimises tear film homeostasis by improving the lipid layer, tear film stability and reducing inflammation.

In one study, LipiFlow treatment prior to cataract surgery improved post-operative dry eye symptoms. In contrast, the untreated control group showed an increase in dry eye symptoms.

Evidence of LipiFlow being a successful treatment for Dry Eyes

Studies have shown that a single dose of LipiFlow treatment for patients suffering with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) reported:

  • Reduced dry eye symptoms by 50%, on average for a duration of 12 months.
  • Tripled mean gland function on average
  • Increased mean contact lens wear time by 4 hours
  • Increased visual and post-operative comfort for cataract and refractive patients
